योग एक सम्यक जीवन का विज्ञान है, अतः इसका समावेश हमारे दैनिक जीवन में एक नित्यचर्या के रूप में होनी चाहिए । यह हमारे व्यक्तित्व के शारीरिक, प्राणिक, मानसिक, भावनात्मक, अतीन्द्रिय और आध्यात्मिक सभी पहलुओं को प्रभावित करता है ।
     योग शब्द का अर्थ है 'ऐक्य' या 'एकत्व' होता है और यह संस्कृत धातु 'युज' से बना है जिसका अर्थ होता है 'जोड़ना'। व्यवहारिक स्तर पर योग शरीर, मन और भावनाओं में संतुलन और सामंजस्य स्थापित करेने का एक साधन है । आसन, प्राणायाम, मुद्रा, बांध, षट्कर्म और ध्यान के अभ्यास से यह संतुलन पाया जा सकता है।

    स्थूल शरीर से प्रारंभ कर योग मानसिक और भावनात्मक स्तर की और अग्रसर होता है। अनेक लोग दैनिक जीवन के दबावों और आपसी व्यवहारों  से उत्पन्न भय और मानसिक रोगों से पीड़ित होते हैं  योग समस्त व्याधियों को निर्मूल तो नहीं कर सकता, परन्तु उनसे जूझने की प्रमाणिक विधि प्रदान कर सकता है ।
     योगाभ्यास से भावनात्मक, मानसिक और शारीरिक स्तरों के आपसी संबंधों के प्रति सजगता का विकास होता है। साथ ही यह सजगता भी आती है की इनमें से किसी एक में असंतुलन उत्पन्न होने पर अन्य भी प्रभावित हुए बिना नहीं  रहते। कर्मश: यह सजगता अस्तित्व के सूक्ष्म क्षेत्रों को समझने की क्षमता प्रदान करती है ।
